Barrett’s Esophagus Treatment in Columbus, GA
Barrett’s Esophagus Care for Patients Throughout West Central Georgia and East Central Alabama
Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that damages and permanently changes the lining of the lower esophagus. It is caused by excessive, frequent exposure to stomach acid, which occurs as a result of chronic acid reflux or gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
There are roughly one million Americans who suffer from Barrett’s esophagus. While it rarely leads to cancer growth, Barrett’s esophagus can increase a patient’s risk of developing esophageal cancer. However, with effective care and treatment, patients can reduce or even reverse symptoms and cancer risks.
If you have developed Barrett’s esophagus or if you suffer from chronic acid reflux or GERD and are at risk of developing it, turn to Southeastern Gastroenterology. Our GI doctors are here to provide the care you need to manage, treat, or even reverse this condition.

What Is Barrett’s Esophagus?
Barrett’s esophagus is a change in the lining of the lower esophagus, or the part of the tract that connects the mouth to the stomach.
In a healthy patient, the esophagus is lined with healthy epithelial tissue that is pink, flat, and scale-like. This lining is called squamous epithelium. With too much exposure to stomach acid, the cells that make up the squamous epithelium can begin to resemble the tissue that lines the stomach, which is called the columnar epithelium.
The abnormal growth and presence of intestinal cells are believed to be the body’s attempt to protect the esophagus from too much acidity. However, patients can still experience painful, irritating inflammation in the esophageal region. Plus, the change in cells increases the possibility of precancerous or cancerous cells developing in the esophagus, which can, in rare cases, lead to esophageal cancer.
Barrett’s Esophagus Treatment From Southeastern Gastroenterology
The GI specialists at Southeastern Gastroenterology offer thorough diagnosis and effective treatment for Barrett’s esophagus, as well as esophageal cancer screening in Columbus, GA.
Exam
In the exam portion, you and your GI specialist will talk about your medical history and symptoms, including details like:
- Family history with acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Personal history of acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Lifestyle habits, including diet
- Average alcohol consumption
- Average tobacco use
- Current medication regimen
Based on your conversation, your doctor may suspect the development of Barrett’s esophagus and may require additional testing to confirm.
Testing
In addition to a physical exam, we may also require tests like:
Upper GI endoscopy
We will insert a flexible tube, or endoscope, into the esophagus to observe and inspect the stomach. This requires a mild sedative.
Biopsy
During the endoscopy, we will take a sample of your esophageal tissue to analyze the cells and check for the presence of cancerous or precancerous cell growth.
Treatment
There are several options to treat, manage, and even reverse Barrett’s esophagus.
- Prescription medications, including proton pump inhibitors that reduce stomach acid and lessen the irritation in the esophagus.
- Routine upper endoscopies with biopsies, which help monitor the condition’s progression and the treatment’s efficacy.
- Radiofrequency ablation, which removes tissue with precancerous cell growth and reduces the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
